Apples Varieties by Field
At County Line Orchard we are passionate about our apples. As America was being settled it was said that a tract of land with 100 apple trees planted was considered a permanent homestead. Since the inception of our farm we have planted over 10,000 apple trees with over 30 varieties. Varieties like Gala and Golden Delicious we have 1,000's of trees but others such Arkansas Black and Sweet 16 we only have a handful, can you find our eight Arkansas Black trees?
Main Field – Est. 1989
This field was one of the first planted at our orchard. The old style of orchard planting utilizing larger trees with more spacing in between. You may also notice the trees are on ridges. This area of the orchard has very dense soil and ridges were necessary to keep the trees from getting water logged. All trees were planted on M111 rootstock. This field has about 2500 trees on 30 acres, 80 trees/acre.
Varieties: Honey Crisp, Gala, Fuji, Golden Delicious, Jonathon, McIntosh, Blushing Golden, Jonagold, and one Pristine
House Field – Est. 1988
This is where it all started. This orchard was planted on the larger M111 rootstock and were also planted on ridges. You will notice a portion of the orchard has been replaced with a smaller rootstock. We had to many Rome apples that were going to waste so we replanted with Suncrisp so we would have more supply for our delicious caramel apples. These new trees were planted on M26 rootstock and did not require ridges. This field has about 300 trees on 2.5 acres, 120 trees/acre.
Varieties: Cortland, Rome, Gala, Jonagold, Suncrisp, Sweet 16 (one tree), and Surprise (1 tree).
There are over 5000 varieties of apples in the world. It is believed that the apple originated in Central Asia near Kazakhstan. Today we use some of these apples to bread new disease resistance cultivars. Purdue University has such a program lead by Jules Janick that created such apples as Sundance, Enterprise, and Goldrush.
Church Field – Est. 1998
After establishing the first two orchards it was time to plant some more trees. We had a 5 acre field across Wayne Street that was perfect for apple trees so…….we planted more M111 rootstock so you will notice most of trees in this block are quite large and planted on ridges as well. This field has about 500 trees on 5 acres, 100 trees/acre.
Varieties: Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Fuji (September Wonder).
Gibson Field – Est. 2000
Planted to kick off the new millennium this was our first orchard planted using the modern orchard system. This system utilizes a smaller rootstock which allows for the trees to be closer together. The result is increased fruit production in a smaller space coupled with a shorter growing tree which is easier to prune and much easier for our customers to pick. In this orchard we have about 2000 trees on 6 acres, giving us 333 trees/acre.
Varieties: Sundance, Golden Delicious, Fuji (September Wonder), Enterprise, Melrose, Shizuka, Granny Smith, Keepsake, Suncrisp, Arkansas Black (8 trees).
